# Sending a Fax

> Send a fax directly from the portal by uploading a PDF and entering a destination number

## Overview

You can send a fax from the portal without a fax machine or any special software. Go to **Fax** in the left menu, then click the **Send Fax** tab.

***

## How to send a fax

1. Type the destination **fax number** in the first box. It must be a 10-digit Australian number starting with 0 (for example `0298001234`)
2. Optionally type a **sender name** in the From field. This appears on the cover page so the recipient knows who it came from
3. Optionally type a **cover message**. This is a short note that goes on the cover sheet before your document
4. Click the upload area (or drag your PDF files onto it) to attach your document
5. Click **Send Fax**

That's it. The fax is queued straight away. You can watch its progress on the **Queue** tab, and once it is delivered it will appear on the **Sent** tab.

<Note>
  Only PDF files are accepted. If your document is a Word file or an image, convert it to PDF first before uploading.
</Note>

## Sending a cover note without a document

If you type a cover message but do not attach a PDF, the portal will ask you to confirm before sending. This is handy for sending a short written note when you do not have a document to attach.

***

## Attaching more than one document

You can add multiple PDF files to a single fax. Each file you add appears in a list showing its name and size. Click the **X** next to any file to remove it before you send.

***

## What happens after you click Send Fax

* A confirmation screen appears. Click **Send Another** if you need to send a second fax straight away
* The fax appears in the **Queue** tab while the system is transmitting it
* Once it is delivered, it moves to the **Sent** tab automatically

## Sending a fax by email

If your practice has email-to-fax set up, you can send a fax by emailing an address provided by Pear. The email subject becomes the fax subject, and any PDF attachments are sent as the document.

To use this, your email address needs to be added as an authorised sender. See [Fax Settings](/messaging/fax-settings) to find out how.
