# Making Calls

> Dial out using the handset, speakerphone, or a headset, plus redial and dialling from contacts

## Overview

You can make a call three ways: through the **handset**, hands-free on the **speakerphone**, or through a **headset**. Dial the number the same way you would on any phone. For outside calls, just dial the number as normal; for a colleague, dial their extension.

## How to make a call

**Button phones (T46 / T54)**

### Using the handset

1. Lift the handset.
2. Dial the number on the keypad.
3. When you've finished dialling, press the **Call** button to connect.

After dialling, press the green Call key to connect

### Using the speakerphone

You can also dial with the handset still on the receiver:

1. Dial the number on the keypad. The phone starts the call on **speakerphone**.
2. Press the **Call** button to connect.
3. When the caller answers, keep talking hands-free on loudspeaker, or lift the handset at any time and the call moves to the handset automatically.

### Using a headset

1. Press the **Headset** key. Its light glows green to show headset mode is on.
2. Dial the number.
3. Press the **Call** button to connect.

### Redialling

1. Press the **Redial** key. Your list of placed calls appears.
2. Scroll to the number you want and press the **Call** button.

## The volume button

The **Volume − / +** key below the keypad does two different jobs, depending on when you press it:

| When you press it | What it adjusts |
| - | - |
| While the phone is **idle or ringing** | The **ringer**: how loud incoming calls ring |
| **During a call** | How loud the caller sounds on whichever you're using: handset, speakerphone, or headset |

The phone remembers each volume separately, so turning the caller up mid-call won't change how loudly your phone rings later. For ringtones and more detail, see [Volume & Ringtones](https://portaldocs.peartelco.app/phones/settings/volume-and-ringtones.md).

## Other ways to dial

* **From your contacts**: open the **Directory** and pick a name. See [Contacts](https://portaldocs.peartelco.app/phones/features/contacts.md).
* **From your call history**: open **History** and call anyone back. See [Call History](https://portaldocs.peartelco.app/phones/features/call-history.md).
* **With one press**: if you have speed dial keys set up, press the key for the person you want. See [Speed dial & busy lamp keys](https://portaldocs.peartelco.app/phones/features/blf-keys.md).
* **From the Pear Portal**: use [Click to Call](https://portaldocs.peartelco.app/my-extension/click-to-call.md) to dial from your browser and have your desk phone place the call.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do I need to dial a 0 to get an outside line?**

On most Pear systems, no. Just dial the number as you normally would. If your organisation uses a dial-out prefix, your administrator will let you know.

**Why does my call take a moment to connect after I finish dialling?**

If you don't press **Call**, the phone waits a few seconds to make sure you've finished dialling before it connects. Pressing **Call** dials immediately.

**Can I call a colleague by name instead of extension?**

Yes. Open the **Directory**, search for their name, and dial from there. See [Contacts](https://portaldocs.peartelco.app/phones/features/contacts.md).
