# Know Your Phone

> A quick tour of the keys and screen on your Yealink handset, so the rest of this guide makes sense

## Overview

Pear systems use two styles of Yealink handset. They do the same things. The difference is how you drive them. Take a minute to find your phone below, and the rest of this guide will feel familiar.

**Button phones (T46 / T54)**

The T46 and T54 series have a colour screen with **four soft keys** directly underneath it, and **line keys** down each side of the screen.

### The keys you'll use most

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Soft keys** (under the screen) | Their job changes with what's on screen. The label above each key tells you what it does right now (for example **Call**, **Hold**, **Transfer**) |
| **Line keys** (beside the screen) | Your line(s), plus any speed dial or colleague keys set up for you |
| **Navigation ring and OK** | Scroll through lists and confirm choices |
| **X key** | Cancel or go back |
| **Hold, Mute, Transfer, Redial** | Dedicated keys for the everyday call actions |
| **Message key** (envelope icon) | Dials your voicemail |
| **Headset key** | Switches the phone into headset mode |
| **Speakerphone key** | Hands-free calling |
| **Volume − / +** | Ringer volume when idle, call volume during a call |

### The screen

The top bar shows the time, date, and status icons, for example a **DND** icon when Do Not Disturb is on, a **forward arrow** when call forwarding is active, or an **envelope** when you have voicemail.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The soft key labels are your best friend. If you're ever unsure what to press, look at the bottom of the screen. The four options shown are always the right ones for that moment.

**Touch screens (T48 / T57)**

The T48 and T57 series have a large **7-inch touch screen**. There are no soft keys under the screen. The buttons appear on the screen itself, and you **tap** them.

### Finding your way around

* **Tap** a button on screen to press it, and **swipe up or down** to scroll through lists.
* **Line, park, and speed dial keys** appear down either side of the screen (tap the **More** key for extra pages on the T48; swipe on the T57).
* The bottom row gives you **History**, **Directory**, **DND**, and **Menu** from any idle screen.
* The **on-screen dial pad** appears whenever you pick up the handset or start a call.

### The physical keys

You still have real keys for the essentials:

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Dial pad** | Enter numbers (you can also tap digits on screen) |
| **Hold, Mute, Transfer, Redial** | Dedicated keys for the everyday call actions |
| **Message key** (envelope icon) | Dials your voicemail |
| **Headset key** | Switches the phone into headset mode |
| **Speakerphone key** | Hands-free calling |
| **Volume − / +** | Ringer volume when idle, call volume during a call |

### The screen

The status bar at the top shows the time, date, and status icons. **DND**, call forwarding, and voicemail indicators all appear there, just like on a smartphone.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Anything this guide says to "press" on a button phone, you simply **tap** on screen instead. The steps are otherwise the same.

## Which model do I have?

The model name is printed on the phone, usually on the label at the bottom of the faceplate or underneath the phone.

| If it says | You have | Follow the steps for |
| - | - | - |
| T46S or T46U | Button phone | **Button phones (T46 / T54)** |
| T54W | Button phone | **Button phones (T46 / T54)** |
| T48S or T48U | Touch screen | **Touch screens (T48 / T57)** |
| T57W | Touch screen | **Touch screens (T48 / T57)** |

## Frequently asked questions

**My phone's labels look slightly different to this guide.**

Older software on some phones uses shorter labels, for example **Tran** instead of **Transfer**, or **Conf** instead of **Conference**. They work exactly the same way. If you'd like your phone updated, [contact support](https://portaldocs.peartelco.app/phones/support.md).

**What are the extra buttons down the side of my screen?**

Those are line keys. Pear usually sets them up as speed dials for your colleagues, with a light that shows whether they're on the phone. See [Speed dial & busy lamp keys](https://portaldocs.peartelco.app/phones/features/blf-keys.md).

**Can I move my phone to another desk?**

Your extension lives in the phone, so plugging it in elsewhere usually just works, but network ports vary between offices. If a move doesn't go smoothly, [contact support](https://portaldocs.peartelco.app/phones/support.md).
