Overview

Your phone has two volumes, and they’re adjusted separately with the same Volume − / + key:
  • Ringer volume: how loud the phone rings. Adjust it while the phone is idle or ringing.
  • Call volume: how loud the caller sounds. Adjust it during a call, and it applies to whatever you’re using at the time: handset, speakerphone, or headset.

Adjusting the ringer

  1. While the phone is idle (or actually ringing), press Volume − or Volume +.
  2. The volume bar appears on screen. Set it where you like.
You can silence the ringer entirely by holding Volume − until the bar reaches zero. Just remember you won’t hear calls at all. Do Not Disturb is usually the better tool, because callers go to voicemail instead of ringing out silently.

Adjusting call volume

  1. During a call, press Volume − or Volume +.
  2. The change applies to the device you’re currently using (handset, speaker, or headset), and the phone remembers it for next time.

Changing your ringtone

  1. Press Menu, then go to Basic > Sound > Ring Tones.
  2. Scroll through the tones. Each one plays as you highlight it.
  3. Press the Save soft key on the one you want.
Sitting in an open office? A distinctive ringtone makes it obvious whose phone is ringing, so pick something different from your neighbours.

Frequently asked questions

Callers say I’m quiet even though I hear them fine. Volume controls what you hear, not what callers hear. First check you’re not muted. If callers consistently struggle to hear you, check the handset cord is firmly plugged in, or contact support. My headset is much quieter than my handset. Adjust the volume while on a headset call. Headset volume is remembered separately from the handset. Many headsets also have their own volume buttons; check those too. See Headsets. Can different callers have different ring sounds? Contacts on your phone can be assigned their own ringtone when you edit them in the Directory, which is handy for spotting your most important callers by ear.
